Transfer Modelling

By Ian Sadler

This tip page has nothing to do with Transfers or Decals; it is a way of transferring one part from a donor kit to an other to aid in conversion or scratch building projects not to mention super detailing.
The only tools you need are your trusty craft knife and a 6 inch double cut, medium cut flat file.

Select the part you want to transfer and cut it out from the Donor kit leaving a good surplus of plastic all round on 3 sides. On the 4th side, you need to leave as much as you can as this forms the handle. I leave at least 1/3 greater than the part on the three sides, only experience will tell you just how much.

Method:

Hold the flat file with the smooth edge towards you and place the part on with the detail you want to use towards you. Then gently rub the flat side of the piece on the surface of the file in a circular motion, try to turn it so as to even out the filing. After a short while lift the piece up to the light and see if you can see that the surplus plastic is starting to thin and become translucent. This should be even all the way round the part you want to use, if it is not then concentrate on the area that you cannot see any light through. When you can see light all the way round the part you want. This is now the time to rub it very gently till you feel the part is starting to crack on this line: repeat the gentle filing for any area that has not cracked this needs to be done very slowly and keep checking against the light. Eventually it will just pop out of the surplus plastic and hey presto you now have the part ready to use on you new projects.

See the examples in the scan, the parts in the scan are from the new Trumpeter KV 2 kit I am converting to an ARV. I have used this method for many years and the smallest parts I have transferred are in 1/76 scale and they are hinges.

Give it a go what have you to lose by practicing on a scrap part.
