Bending Stainless Steel PE frets

By Ian Sadler

There has been a lot of talk about how to soften Stainlees Steel  PE frets for bending , so here is a little tip and worked example.

This applies to the new stainless steel types used in some models. Always try this out on a similar scrap piece before you commit to the one you need from the model.  Hold the scrap fret in a pair of pinchers over a naked candle flame till it turns colour , you will see it change from a yellow straw , to blue then a deep purple , it is at this stage you need to  remove it from the flame and allow to cool. Wash it off with soapy water to remove the soot and leave to dry , it should be soft enough to bend without cracking . See worked example for the correct  colour and try to obtain the same , Brass needs a different aproach and I am working on this right now so keep tuned.
